bailey ʚїɞThis novel was okay. I read it immediately after reading ‘The Red Palace,’ which was a mistake because that novel is fantastic. The plot of this novel is definitely interesting and I like the plot twist, but I didn’t like the protagonist of the book… she was a bit annoying to be honest because she was constantly throwing herself a pity party for nearly half the story. However, June Hur, of course, laid out the plot and paced the novel well, as she always does.
bailey ʚїɞEnjoyed this book once I was able to get into it! The plot is well-crafted and realistic, with a phenomenal attention to detail. I was able to figure out the culprit before it was revealed but for none of the reasons listed by the protagonist, which I actually enjoyed. However, this book is very very very descriptive… to the point where it can go overboard. If you want fast pace, constantly changing scenes, maybe look elsewhere. But if you’re willing to spend the time on this book, I would highly recommend it! I’m looking forward to reading the next book in this series!
bailey ʚїɞTHE best “contract marriage” drama I have ever watched. The FL played her role very well and in a manor that was actually realistic and relatable. Wei Zhe Ming, the ML, was PHENOMENAL in this show- he finally got a romance drama deserving of his acting skills. The plot has everything a romance drama fan would want from childhood crush, to contract marriage, to enemies to lovers (in the second leads), and even a couple that doesn’t work out in the end. It explores the difficulties a young person faces in the workplace and how that impacts the rest of our lives. The ML character is actually very sweet, and is portrayed in a way that is thoughtful and not stalkerish… I mean, maintaining a childhood crush into adulthood is always kind of a little stalkerish, but the character is sincere and innocent, which I found sweet. Overall, this drama was refreshing and a nice break from the overly cliche dramas. Oh, also, the main leads displayed healthy communication… never thought I’d see that in a Chinese drama!
bailey ʚїɞThis drama had so much potential, but fell disappointing flat. The plot idea is interesting, but nothing in the show is well-developed. The characters are surface-level at best, and the show unfolds so quickly that there is no tension. The first episode is actually the best episode of the entire show. All of the actors did a great job, but the male leads character adds nothing to the show. Wei Zhe Ming is such a phenomenal actor that it seems like a waste to give him such a role…. He is supposed to be this cold-hearted general and the writers wrote him as a lovesick puppy. Plus, his wig is the completely wrong color and doesn’t match the rest of his hair😭 I will say that the leads had good chemistry, which is expected considering they have worked together before. The cliffhanger ending was also interesting, but could have had more of an impact if the plot had been explored more. Overall, I’d say this drama was meh. Could have been a lot better, but it also could have been worse. I’d give it a 5/10
bailey ʚїɞThis is one of the top 5 Chinese dramas I have watched. The plot of each episode is extremely interesting and there is a main plot that carries through the entire show. All of the characters are well played (second male lead was actually my favorite character), and the romance between the mains is slow-burning but not cliche. Aesthetics of the show are great, especially the wardrobe. It was actually difficult for me to find another Chinese show to watch after this one because it was just that good. Downfalls? A lot of the explanations he gives for cases had yet to be discovered in the 1930s (i.e. the modern understanding of the mitochondria wasn’t understood until the 1960s), but I only caught those things because I am a scientist—it doesn’t impact the intrigue of the show. Another problem was the end…. It left a lot to be desired. They could have completed the male lead’s character arc in a much better way, but it doesn’t detract from the rest of the show! Highly recommend!!!
