Come Closer - Likewise Book Reviews

"One of the scariest books I've read. The hopelessness builds as you read, and it stays with you long after the last page."
"Come Closer was a quick, creepy, and fun read. It was a fast-paced possession novel, and I was really happy with it after being disappointed by my last two reads. It's not anything gory, but it's definitely an eerie little book. It's probably not going to surprise you - it's not full of twists and turns or anything wild - but it's one that will stick with you. I wish it would have been longer, and I'll definitely read another novel by Gran."

"āļøāļøāļøāļøāļø<br/>I loved this book! A perfect choice for the Final Girl A Thon. Iāve been looking for the perfect possession horror story for awhile, and I think I finally found it. This book is amazing because it isnāt over the top; itās realistic enough to make you, as the reader, even more scared because it makes you picture how easily this situation could happen to you. Several parts had my heart pounding and my palms sweating as I was scared and anxious of what would happen next. This is a great, short horror book that I hope more people decide to pick up."
"FLOP.
I donāt think Iāve ever rolled my eyes so many times in my life. I listened to the audiobook version, so the one compliment I can give is to the voice actor, who did a fantastic job with what little she was given.
Iām not sure why so many people like this book 'cause I was bored and annoyed the entire time. The story follows Amanda, a young woman who works for an architecture firm and begins to suspect she is being taken over by an evil entity after strange things start happening to her. Solid premise, poorly executed. While Iām pretty sure I was supposed to care about the main character, Gran seems to have a knack for creating someone I couldnāt care less about.
Amanda comes across as a stuck-up, ignorant narcissistāa teenager trapped in an adultās bodyāconstantly irritated by everyone and everything around her. On multiple occasions, she uses homophobic slurs, which feel more like the authorās voice slipping through, and that immediately turned me off. Her fear of being possessed felt like an excuse to seek attention and justify more sociopathic behavior. And then⦠she takes a quiz to see if sheās possessed? Seriously? Nice to know thereās a religious equivalent of The Red Crossās Emergency First Aid Guide to diagnose demonic possession. It was ridiculous enough already, but why does she keep receiving constant confirmation of her possession and still refuse to do anything about it? After taking the ridiculous quiz three times, she only seeks help after nearly killing someoneāand only because her husband casually suggests therapy? Ugh.
The plot moved quickly, but for a horror novel, it was anything but scary. It was just boring. The only other character with any significant presence is her husband, Ed. While I occasionally felt bad for him, not even he wasnāt developed enough to convince me he was worth rooting for. The few times he spoke, he came across as either weak or misogynisticāstrike two.
Frankly, I was just bored. I know that's repetitive, but t"
"I had very high expectations for this book - I wanted nightmares!! But I thought it was more ādisturbingā than anything else, which is okay but subpar to what I wanted/expected given the recommendations I got. I felt that there was no real conclusion - which I guess adds to the disturbing nature? But I sped through the book and felt āmeh.ā I think The Exorcist was scarier truthfully. "
"I was soooooo excited to read this book.......since the reviews I had read were calling it one of the scariest books ever......and I had been searching a really good scary read.<br/><br/>Well....I was very disappointed in this book.....maybe I'm just desensitized by all the horror books I read......but this book was just not scary......it was actually a bit predictable and I caught myself laughing at a few parts.....especially the 'Are You Possessed By A Demon' questionnaire....oh how I chuckled at that one (as did my husband).<br/><br/>There was a review that said "this book should come with a warning"....well I agree that it should come with a warning of 'Come Closer if you want a fast read with a very tepid horror story....The best part of the book was the cover....<br/><br/>"
"Really enjoyed Sour Candy by Kealan Patrick Burke! Just purchased another by the author, Jack & Jill. Sour Candy was just the right amount of Lovecraftian to be spooky without too off the hinges. Just started The Collector as well as Pretty Girls! I'm on a mad dash to get through 10 horror books before Halloween š"
