Jessica BunneyAn absolute page turner that buried me, literally I suffered. The last pages had me not knowing whether to cry or throw my book at the wall.

Rin, baby, please just take a long nap. You need it. And Kitay, I love you.
Venka, you need a hug.
Nezha...
Jessica BunneyI literally just died. This was packed with so much I could barely even comprehend it, the magic system was so enriched and was handled so beautifully. I was about to rate it a 4.7 only because I'm so slow that the worldbuilding parts and the word history would slow it down for me but the ending topped it off to a 5.
I've got to say the way the author handled the themes of racism, colonization and all of its cycles was just so beautiful. And I love that Victoire was Haitian as also as a Haitan, I feel like we can be unrepresented in history, novels etc.
It was such a devastating but realistic story, with compelling characters who were flawed but for a reason. I hated some but I could understand their actions, though horrible, were founded in blind commitment to the environment they were raised in. This story just sheds light on so many modern day problems which is why I would recommend this book to so many people, even if this isn't their type of read.

Thank you R.F Kuang, I now am going to go cry.
Jessica BunneyLoved this! It was honestly just cozy and fun to read. I love the side characters and all the weird characteristics of each character that made each of them stand out. Hoid was undoubtedly my favourite character, he was too funny. But ultimately, though it may have not been the kind of life changing novel one might read, it was still just so heartwarming to read. It felt like a fairytale you may have read when you were younger, and the characters were just so likable, and well crafted. They all just had their quirks and it was so fun to read and watch them grow. Ultimately, definitely going on my cozy reading list and I am looking forward to reading more of Brandon Sanderson's work.
Jessica BunneyWell this was exactly what I thought it would be and a little more. I was looking for something that would make me think a little bit more than my others book do. and preferably also punch me in the gut; which it did. It took me a second to warm up to the characters except for Emilia but once I did loved them. All of it was just so tragic, horrific and absolutely gut-wrenching but it was told in such a way that each page was a page turner, and I had the will to continue. The romance was a bit juvenile and off-putting, because it kind of boiled down toβ I find him pretty, he finds me pretty sort of ordeal immediately but it helped serve some sweet and light moments to an otherwise dark story so I didn't absolutely hate it. Alfred on the other hand well
... I don't have much to say about him except for the fact I didn't totally detest his ending. Truly this was an amazing book I'll probably never read again to keep myself sane but it was impactful and meaningful and my heart goes out to all those who have lost family and loved ones in war.
Jessica Bunneyidk just didn't really like the twist but it's a me thing bcs I folded mb
