The Boyfriend - Likewise Book Reviews
"Let me start by saying the main character was insufferable! One idiotic decision after another. There were so many times I wanted to smack her around and ask her what she was thinking. This was fairly quick paced and definitely got better towards the end. Not my favorite by Freida, but not as bad as The Inmate. 3.5 out of 5 stars "
"I gave The Boyfriend three stars. The story was interesting enough to keep me reading, but it wasn’t one that completely grabbed my attention. It follows Sydney as she navigates a relationship with Tom, whose secrets and past slowly unravel, and his peculiar best friend, Gretchen, who adds a layer of intrigue and unease to the plot.
The ending was a bit unexpected, but it wasn’t mind-blowing either, more of a twist that wraps things up in a satisfying yet predictable way. The characters were solid, with Gretchen being particularly memorable as her obsession and true intentions unfolded. Overall, it’s a decent psychological thriller with a mix of suspense, dark secrets, and an exploration of obsession, though it didn’t quite reach the level of a standout read for me."

"This book was sooo good. My first from this author and I'm hooked. I enjoyed her smooth and easy to read writing style. The twists and turns kept me captivated and eager to finish the book. "
"I was looking for a quick and entertaining read and I found just that! I love that McFadden’s books are easy to get in to and always end with a twist you did not see coming. I always love the feeling of being shocked and combing through the previous pages to reinterpret what I thought I knew.

I will forever love stories that I can quickly digest and offer easy entertainment as I unsuccessfully convince myself to only read one more chapter."
"Addictive like a potato chip, you can’t stop at just one. This was a buddy-read October pick meant to last a week. Ya well, that didn’t happen and I couldn't help reading ahead. This was my first Freida McFadden book and was a great choice because I loved it as well as everyone in the group. More than one oddball could be the killer and I kept changing my mind on who it could be. There are red herrings everywhere and an open ending for a potential second book."

"14th book of 2025
Honestly, one of my faves from her. I consider her books to be easy reading airplane books meaning they’re FUN… and this one definitely was. "

"A good book. If you are a Freida fan, you know that things are never what they seem. As hard as I tried to figure out what the plot twist was going to be, I didn’t see it coming. The main character was likable and realistic, but a bit of an idiot (how many bad decisions can you make in a day?!) I would give it 5 stars but the ending, while it was a good plot twist, I felt it didn’t give me closure as a reader. "
"I don’t think I’ve ever been as frustrated with a character as I was with Sydney! Every time I wanted to shout, “Girl, use your brain!” It felt like she made bad decision after bad decision, almost to the point of comedy. But that twist—wow, I did not see that coming at all!

This was a really quick read and served as a perfect palette cleanser. It kept me hooked, always wondering what was going to happen next. Overall, it was engaging and worth the read. I’d give it a solid 3.5 stars!"

"The back and forth time line was easy to keep up with and both exciting making this book a real page turner. This is a really good book. I recommended this to friends!"
"1st..... This book, overall stated, don't trust a girl that just pops up in yoga or dating the creepiest person you know!!

2nd. Don't listen to your mother. Give random facts about the age you can pop her out a grandchild! LOL!!!

3rd. hey, they can never make me dislike a Fredia book! Lol, ok once! But you have to redeem yourself in my eyes!! I really enjoyed this one! I haven't been this wrong about a person in any book lol I should have KNOWN! I'm sorry, slug! I really thought you were kevin, my dude!"

"The prologue of the book immediately drew me in. I enjoyed the way the chapters went back and forth between Tom in high school and Tom in real time. Both sides of the book were written so well as to not give anything away. The plot twist at the end with Daisy actually made my jaw drop - I never would have guessed who the killer was. It was also shocking when Tom chose to go with her even though he had built a successful life for himself. Amazing writing, easy read, and great plot twist. "

"Definitely enjoyed this book, and plot twist wasn’t expected "
"3.5/5. This was my first thriller in a while. It has a very good twist at the end, which was my favorite thing about the book. Sydney was SO ANNOYING. She made so many dumb decisions, imo, that made her chapters hard to read. I enjoyed the flashbacks with Tom, though. Overall, the book kept me engaged because I wanted to see if my theories were correct."

"This was a really fast read. It definitely kept my interest. I read alot of reviews that said the plot twist was confusing. I did have to take a second to put my thoughts together. But it was really good and made sense."

"3.75 ✨
I liked this & there were plot twists I didn’t see coming which I appreciated. The only thing I wasn’t too crazy about was all the negative self-talk and the unsure inner monologue with our FMC. I felt some things were unnecessary but regardless, it was still a good Frieda McFadden read"

"What did I just read!? This is my first Frieda book, it was so damn good! I couldn’t put it down! It sucked me in, chewed me up, then spit me out! You’ll never see it coming, just when you think you have it figured out, guess again! Well done, Frieda, I cannot wait to read another one of your books!"

"Totally didn't see the end coming. I love books with twists and this one delivered. "
"DNF’d at 60%. I like thrillers with smart twists. This was not it. Sydney has got to be the dumbest protagonist ever, but the year is still young so we’ll see. It’s frustrating to be connecting dots the main character isn’t putting together simply because the author needs her not to put them together.

I read reviews to get the twists and reveals at the end and I was glad I didn’t finish the book. It would not have been worth the time and energy to read until the end."
